Get Involved

Volunteers – The Lifeblood of the Club
Many of us join the Sierra Club because we care about the natural world and want to help with its preservation. However, finding the best way to get involved can be a challenge. We need your help now! To learn about volunteer opportunities, contact our Volunteer Coordinator - Don Ferber at 222-9376 or d_ferber@sbcglobal.net.

RAH VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR
WATERFRONT FESTIVAL JUNE 7-8!

The Marquette Neighborhood Association "season opener" is coming up soon! This year the always hoppin' Marquette Waterfront Festival will be held at Yahara Park on June 7-8. Once again, our Recyling Away from Home program will provide recyling containers and will haul garbage and recyclables in order to minimize the landfill load that this festival could potentially create.

Volunteers are needed for set up on Saturday morning, throughout the day Saturday and Sunday, and to break down Sunday evening. Shifts are 3 hours each, and within each shift there is usually ample time to also enjoy the festival. Duties include a minimal amount of sorting, but mostly checking and replacing bags, and hauling bags to the pick-up spot nearby.

Saturday June 7: set up 9-11 (2 volunteers)
                          11-2 pm     (1-2)
                          2-5             (3)
                          5-8             (4)

Sunday June 8  10-1            (1-2)
                          1-4 is covered
4-8            (4, or can split this shift if we have enough volunteers)

Volunteer Opportunities

Conservation Committee
Our most important function, Conservation promotes clean energy and personal conservation. Our conservation group discusses member education, service outings, public outreach and multiple other ways that we can help hold the line against those who would put profits and short term gains over the sustainability of our planet. If you're interested in helping with this most important task,
email Seth Nowak for details.

Inner City Outings
Madison Inner City Outings is our community outreach program that provides disadvantaged, city youth with wilderness trips for education and recreation. See www.madisonico.org for details. This group is always looking for fun, creative people who'd like to help with both administrative organization and working with the kids & leading trips. If interested, please contact ICO Chair Terri Felton at 663-8874 or tfelton@tds.net.

Outings Leaders
We are always looking for people who want to meet new people and encourage a love of wilderness in our members and the public. Leaders dream up hikes, bike rides, canoe trips, camping trips, dinners or other outings that they would like to lead, then work with the Outings Chair to select a date and write up a description for the web site and newsletter. The Outings team meets bi-monthly to brainstorm the upcoming calendar. To get involved, contact Bill Fenske, our Outings Chair, at duh.guru@att.net

Publicity Committee
Do you like to write? Do you have a passion for the environment, but don't want to lead outings or do political work? Then maybe this is the job for you! The Publicity Commitee handles content and journalism for our Four Lakes Sierran, published four times a year. They also help with the occassional press release, writing public service announcments and coming up with creative ways to get our message out to the masses. If interested, please contact Kate Blumenthal at kateblu2001@yahoo.com.

Recycling Away from Home
RAH is a joint project with a few other environmental and neighborhood groups. The task at hand is to encourage recycling at community events using a two-pronged approach. We provide volunteers to handle recycling efforts at the event, but we also offer information to event planners on how to be more earth-friendly by asking vendors to use items like recyclable beer cups or biodegradable food service clamshells. To get on the volunteer list for our summer events, visit www.madisonrah.org or contact Lacinda Athen at lathen@farin.com or 274-7870.

Outreach is so important to us - Thank You to everyone who helps!

Bill Fenske from the Four Lakes Group and Kate Schulte from Madison Inner City Outings, along with many other volunteers, helped staff an informational table at Wisconsin Public Television's Garden Expo. They sold t-shirts, calendars and placemats to raise funds, signed up interested new volunteers and handed out literature on our various conservation campaigns.

Marshall Mundt and Paul Abramson show off the Sierra Club booth at the Willy Street Fair, as well as our new clear "easy-to-see" recycling bins used for our Recycling Away from Home campaign.

The Sierra Club presence at summer festivals helps us spread the word on our "Saving Energy Together" campaign as well as tell others about our great outings and educational programs.

We also often share a booth with Inner City Outings, our urban youth program.
