Volunteer Opportunity Descriptions
Outings Leaders
One of our primary missions is to encourage participation in outdoor activities and experience nature’s beauty. If you enjoy hiking, cycling, camping, paddling or other outdoor activity, and are willing to help others do the same, we’d love to hear from you. Outings leadership is a very rewarding opportunity. You can meet great people, share your love of outdoor activities with others, and participate in educational workshops to learn things from basic first aid to advanced wilderness survival skills. Contact Kathy Mulbrandon to learn more.
Moving Beyond Coal!
We’ve made great progress getting coal removed in state owned power plants, including Charter St in Madison. Now with the major Bloomberg grant the Sierra Club received, we’ll be ramping up our efforts to shut down old coal plants here in Wisconsin. This is your opportunity to help us eliminate 30% of the coal in Wisconsin by 2020 and get us onto clean energy solutions including efficiency measures and renewable energy. Want to get involved? Contact Don Ferber today!
Madison Inner City Outings
Madison Inner City Outings is an outreach program of the Sierra Club. ICO offers hiking and camping trips, boating and skiing outings, and other outdoor adventures to underprivileged youth in the Madison area. We work with Partner Groups and certified Volunteer Leaders to offer outdoor learning experiences for our kids. Visit www.madisonico.org to learn more, then contact Ron Haeger to get involved!
Recycling Away from Home
We recycle at home – why not away? Or if you consider the planet your home, you should always recycle. This is an opportunity to extend that effort to neighborhood festivals in Madison. The two remaining for us are the Orton Park Festival August 28 – 30 and the Willy St Fair, September 19 and 20. Please consider signing up to help us organize volunteers for these events or be a Day Captain. Visit www.madisonrah.org to learn more about this project, then contact Lacinda Athen to get involved!
Communications Team
Do you have writing, editing, or graphics skills? Do you have a key environmental issue you care about? Are you worried or mad as hell about what’s going on in this state regarding protecting people and the environment, and want to do something about it? Do you surf the web, use Facebook or Twitter much, or have a blog? Then talk with us about how you can get involved with our team, help set strategy, or help us with communicating our messages more effectively. Contact Lacinda Athen to get involved!
Tabling & Outreach
At various events throughout the year, the Sierra Club has an informational booth or table, to help spread the word about our conservation efforts. Its a great way to meet people and learn more about the issues. You don’t have to be an expert, just have a friendly smile and a few hours to spare. Contact Don Ferber to get involved.
Outreach is so important to us – Thank You to everyone who helps!
